The Oregon State Fair and Exposition Center is home to Oregon's largest event, the Oregon State Fair, but is bustling 365 days a year as an event venue for conferences, concerts, livestock exhibitions, weddings, and private parties.
It is a requirement of the Small Animal Superintendent for the Oregon State Fair to be able to meet all of the
following requirements:
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Leadership
• Development and implement the strategic plan for the Open Class Small Animal Shows.
• Manage the Small Animal Department in a manner that encourages growth, innovation, and education.
Job Duties:
• Attend Superintendent Meetings either in person or via conference calling, and/or Zoom Meetings.
• Coordinate all activities of show during the Fair staying in compliance with the policies, rules and
guidelines outlined in the Oregon State Fair Handbook.
• Secure Judges and clerks for the show no later than January 1.
• Must be available throughout the year to answer exhibitor questions and/or concerns.
• Obtain feed for animals (poultry, pigeons, rabbits, & cavies) for the fair time period and work with Ag Programs
Manager and Sponsorship team to secure donation for feed.
• Superintendent will make all changes in the handbook for that species and return it to the Ag
Programs Manager by the date requested.
• Prepare Historic Poultry Building or project area to ensure it is aesthetically pleasing, clean, and
organized. Ensure signs are ordered through Ag Programs Manager and are hung prior to Fair
opening.
General Requirements/Basic Requirements:
• Superintendents need to be familiar with the project area as listed in the Exhibitor Handbook.
• Superintendents need to have access to a computer and internet to correspond with exhibitors and fair
employees at all times.
• The superintendent should be prepared for entry day by finding out the number of entries and planning
accordingly. Cage Layouts will be available once cages are set up for superintendents to do caging
assignments.
• Superintendents need to coordinate work crews & volunteers to complete work that needs to be
completed in the Historic Poultry Building, barn and/or project area before, during, and after the fair. If
you cannot secure volunteers or clerks the Agricultural Programs Manager will need to be notified no
later than May 1 so other plans can be made.
• Superintendents are responsible for the overall organization, coordination, and supervision of the
project area, including developing consistency between project area objectives, fair exhibition and
judging.
• Submit all required paperwork on time. Any changes that need to be made need to be in writing to the Agricultural Programs Manager via email.
• Manage conflicts that arise in the project area. If conflicts cannot be corrected internally, bring to the
Agricultural Programs Manager.
• Superintendents must contact judges and present all contact information to the Agricultural Programs
manager by April 1 at the latest.
• Arrive at least (1 to 2) hours prior to your event and have your judging area organized and prepared
before the judge(s) arrive (trophies, ribbons, table covers, signs, tables, chairs, etc.).
• Meet with the exhibitors at least one (1) hour prior to the show to explain what is expected and how the
order of the day will go.
• Be sure judges sign the judging sheet after the show. They can sign top page or all the pages their
choice.
• Be available at all times to ensure that judging is fair, efficient, and orderly.
• Deliver judging sheets signed by the judge, trophy winner sheets and all other paperwork to the
Livestock office promptly after the show. If the Office is closed due to a late show, then turn in first thing
the following morning.
Working Conditions:
This position will experience long hours prior to, during and pre & post Fair. The individual will experience numerous
hours of sitting, standing and walking on hard surfaces. Lifting objects weighing twenty pounds or more may be
required. The individual must be able to address the needs of upset guests, participants, employees, contractors and
volunteers in a diplomatic fashion.
Supervision:
Directly supervised by the Agricultural Programs Manager.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
Experience and relationships within the Ag industry are beneficial.
Experience with small animals and showing them is necessary.
Possess or have the ability to obtain ARBA Membership.
Must pass a criminal background check.
